Weapons in Dark Frontiers: SG20 BLASTER
As settlers increasingly began to independently explore the surface and subsurface of the Moon, close quarter encounters with hostile aliens became more frequent. As more expeditions were assigned dedicated security details, demand increased for a locally produced weapon with a greater firepower than the S05 pistol. The result was the SG20 blaster “shotgun”.
Blaster weapons are notorious for being almost as dangerous to the user as they are for the intended target. The suspended plasma in the chamber is highly unstable, and if the plasma build-up and release is not carefully controlled, it can overload the containment fields, invariably leading to an explosive meltdown.
Despite this, the decision was made to strip back some of the core systems in order to improve the portability of the weapon and remove the need for large external power packs. The weakened containment field can now only hold the charge of three plasma shells, and with no automation, the shells must be inserted into the loading chamber and then pumped into the plasma chamber by hand.
Even in its slimmed down state, the SG20 is still awkward to wield, and the manual loading and priming of the plasma chamber reduces its effective rate of fire in sustained engagements. Nonetheless, the weapon remains popular among those that often encounter aliens in tight quarters, who value the quick devastation they can unleash when caught out at close and melee range.
