“How is work going on the wall in corridor five?”

“Slow, but steady, sir. We’ve not been able to find any obvious access mechanisms. Sensor readings indicate that there aren’t any significant power strips going through the wall though, so we’re drilling a probe hole to see what’s there.

“How long will that take?

“Not long, we expect to send the probe through within the next few minutes. Also, temperature readings of the wall show temperatures an average of four degrees higher than other walls nearby. “

“So, something is emitting thermal energy behind there then. Interesting.”

“Yes! Team five are betting a round of drinks that we’re ether looking at a backup reactor or a thermal shaft.”

“Any takers?”

“Well, Akerman did, suggesting it might be resistance heat from some kind of power substation, but I don’t think so. I don’t think Progenitor tech ever runs hot like that.”

(Distant) “We’re through!”

(Sound of steps)

“OK, get the probe feed up on screen three, then send it in.”

“Dark in there.”

“Yeah, no lighting. Switch on the onboard light source.”

Holy shit, what is that?!

Reference: First encounter with Alien species C, later termed “Aagrali”

The Aagrali

Initially found within Progenitor structures, The Aagrali are suspected to be the result of a genetic experiment seeking to remove errors and degradation in genetic replication.

Bipedal, hairy and immensely strong, individual Aagrali are capable of astonishing feats of healing due to a rapid and near flawless cell regeneration process.

Believed to possess minimal intelligence, Aagrali are almost constantly hungry due to their fast metabolism. Given the limited artificial food supplies provided within their habitats, they will eat almost anything, including humans and, in extreme situations, other Aagrali.

The most immediately distinctive feature of an Aagrali is its quadrisect beak, which can grow to over two foot in length. This has, combined with its birdlike legs, led to some speculation as to whether Aagrali are a unique genetic creation or a modification of the genetic structure of a terrestrial bird species or even something earlier.

Aagrali in action

The most striking feature of an Aagrali is its dorsal maw, which runs down its spine from the base of its head to a point the back of its torso. When agitated, the maw tears open in a grotesque process that physically damages the Aagrali.

Initially believed to be a process designed to intimidate and confuse opponents (a process that was 100% successful on the first humans to witness it), later dissections have indicated that the increased surface area might help cool the body core as it goes into overdrive in intense situations.

After closing again, the entire rift heals and knits itself together over the course of a few days.

Over the years following the initial encounter, Aagrali have been seen outside their normal habitat zones, implying either a population boom, or that the human presence has led them to seek out food outside their usual feeding grounds.
